Review of DVD "Doolittle"
Review of the DVD Dolittle starring Robert Downey,
Jr., Tom Holland, Salena Gomez, and Michael Sheen
Dolittle did little for me. There you have it. What more needs to be said? Much, because this movie was a huge
disappointment. From the time my
daughters and I saw the trailer in December we were looking forward to when it would
come to the big screen. Both want to be
zoologists when they grow up. This movie
not only has a doctor who “talks to the animals” but has animals, thanks to
recent innovations in the technical world, who appear to be talking back to the
good doctor. What better movie for us to
take in as a family of future zoologists?
But my two future zoologists gave up on the movie once the
novelty of the talking animals wore off.
I was left alone on the couch watching a movie that kept getting
increasingly tedious. I finally turned
it off. Done with the predictable plot. Done with the overblown acting. Even done with the precocious, little squirrel. Done.
Done. Done. And perturbed that I did not wait until the library
was open again to get this foolish film for free, rather than be out the two
bucks by going to Redbox. That two bucks
could have gone towards buying a lottery ticket. The Powerball jackpot is $325 million right
now! Which is almost twice of what it
cost to make this movie!
Perhaps my expectations were too high. I have enjoyed watching Robert Downey, Jr. in
his Ironman role. Tom Holland has become
my favorite Spiderman. The two of them
playing off one another in the Avengers series, especially the last two films Infinity
War and Endgame, was “super”.
Having them together again would be reminiscent of having Paul Newman
and Robert Redford together again in The Sting after they both died at
the end of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Both of those were memorable movies. Infinity War and Endgame are
memorable movies as well. Dolittle
is best forgotten for the sake of both Robert Downy, Jr.’s and Tom Holland’s
careers.
Yes, Dolittle did little for me. I suspect it would do the same for you. If you and your family have a hankering to
see a doctor who talks to animals, it would be better for you to check out the
original Doctor Dolittle with Rex Harrison. Up for three academy awards in 1967 and winning
for best song, “Talk to the Animals,” it will do more for you and any future
zoologists you may have in your home.
