DVD "THE TRIAL" ( and book by Robert Whitlow ) starring Mathew Modine This movie sets a pace that is driven by the determination of a lawyer whose life has been upended by a tragedy in his life where he lost his wife and sons in an auto accident while he was driving. Soon thereafter he is approached to work on a case as a defense attorney. He is defending a man accused of murdering his true love by drugging her and then killing her, protecting himself by drugging himself as a coverup. The opposing attorney is as scrupulous as they come. The viewer begins to wonder if the defendant is innocent or is he guilty. I was pulled into the movie immediately, and now I want to read the book to get all the details not divulged in the movie! RETURN TO VIRGIN RIVER by Robyn Carr

After the death of her mother, Meredith, daughter Kaylee, at the age of thirty-five, needed an escape from her depression and broken heart. Meredith had been not only her mother, but also her best friend. The Templeton’s, who were good friends of Meredith and Kaylee, offered their vacation home in Virgin River to Kaylee. She planned on doing what she had wanted to do since she was a child - to write a book. So she packed up enough clothing and supplies to get her started to live in Virgin River for a few months. Little did she know that this sleepy small town would change her life in so many ways! I thoroughly enjoyed this story by Carr. It’s a follow up to her original story of Virgin River. Some of you may remember that at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in New York City there was a funeral of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish rabbi that drew thousands of non-social-distancing mourners which incurred the tweeted criticism of NYC’s mayor, Bill de Blasio.  In witnessing the scene on news outlets many “sheltering-in-place” viewers may have wondered what in the heck these clad-from-head-to-foot- in-black devotees were thinking!  Were they utterly oblivious to the dire threat that the virus posed for such gatherings?  Were they crazed, reckless, or what?  What they were was Hasidim, a sect within Judaism that has its origins in 18 th century eastern Europe.  What they are is deeply fervent in their faith and, yes, in their dedication to and love for their spiritual leaders, especially of their dynastic heads known as rebbes of which Rabbi Chaim Mertz was one.
